I’ve been caught up in what I ‘should’ be doing to help her sleep ‘better’

Caught up in trying to get her to sleep in her cot because that’s where she ‘should’ be sleeping.

Caught up in creating a schedule, weaning her off me, encouraging her to eat more.

And all the time I’m caught up, I’m missing out.

Missing out on the cuddles, on the unscheduled moments, the contact napping.

Missing out on the little moments worrying about the, seemingly, Big Things.

Today she slept right here, her snuffly, ‘I almost have a cold’ breath hot on my body.

And I forgot about the shoulds ❤️

N U R T U R E The word nurture is so heavily asso N U R T U R E

The word nurture is so heavily associated with parenting, we all know babies and children need nurturing.

But what so many of us forget is that as mums we also need to be nurtured, and more than that, we need to nurture ourselves.

The early days, weeks and months of parenthood are a rollercoaster of emotions that leave us struggling to know our own names some days let alone to stop and think about ourselves, to ‘take time away’ from being with our baby for self care. It can feel greedy, selfish and unimportant to make time for ourselves.

Then before we know it, self care and nurturing ourselves becomes a ‘thing’ and we all know there are enough of them to get through every day.

But I have learned the hard way that, as a mum, it’s even more important that I look after myself! I physically cannot look after her when I am exhausted or when my mental wellbeing is spiralling, both of which come from me not allowing myself time to pause and catch my breath.  So, to be able to nurture myself I have had to work out how to create space for self care. It’s not always daily, it’s not always the same thing but it is always something that makes me feel nurtured.

Tomorrow I am running a FREE session on what it means to be nurtured, how we as mums can nurture ourselves and what feelings and thoughts come up as we explore the topic. There’ll be mindfulness activities to help you get grounded and into the present moment, tools to take away and use when you feel your head chatter taking over, space to explore your feelings and emotions and, best of all, time to connect with other new mums.

S E L F - C A R E It's been a minute since I show S E L F - C A R E

It's been a minute since I showed up here and, to be honest, that's because I just couldn't face it. I could feel myself spiralling towards the darkness and struggling to keep all the plates spinning.

So I’ve spent the last few weeks taking some of my own advice and looking after myself.

Giving myself time and permission to stop, catch my breath and be in the moment.

Spending her nap times sleeping instead of working, to try and make up for lost sleep at night.

Reassessing what’s important to me and how I want to spend my time then creating space to be able to do that and move away from the things that no longer align.

Having actual conversations with friends, going for socially distanced walks and ordering take-aways when no one wanted to cook.

Making peace with the fact the recent Covid roadmap announcement didn’t bring the relief I anticipated.

Understanding that it’s ok to be finding everything harder than ever even though there’s ‘an end in sight’
Mourning the lost plans, hopes and expectations from the last year of my life and first year of her life.

Most of all it’s meant being kind to, and patient with, myself.

Sometimes we need a nudge to look after ourselves ❤️

M I S E R Y Today was a miserable day. It’s im M I S E R Y

Today was a miserable day.

It’s impossible to let yourself get caught up in feeling all the feelings rather than fixing them, without succumbing sometimes.

“You’re so miserable, it’s exhausting” he said.

Today was a day that I woke up glum and that escalated quickly.

A day in which the fact we can’t go anywhere or do anything seemed harder than it has on so many other days.

The pressure of running two businesses, being a mum, girlfriend, daughter and friend all felt like heavy weights.

The absence of connection and interaction really hit home.

The light at the end of the tunnel feels so far away.

So yes, today I feel miserable. And moany #. I know it’s no more fun for anyone else than it is for me.

So, if you’re feeling the feels and miserable is the one for today (or tomorrow, or lots of days) you’re not alone.

Allow yourself to wallow and feel - it will pass 💫
